Sharon Sass

Sharon Sass has been painting ever since she can remember. Although she now paints primarily on Cape Cod, her creative life has taken many turns along the way. Born in 1954 in Texas, and raised in Ohio, she made her way east as a teenager to attend Rhode Island Scool of Design. From there she went to Boston to become a psychologist, start a practice, a family and raise three children. But throughout the years, she has always kept an easel close at hand.

These days she can be found, most mornings, in her studio where she devotes much of her time and energy to being a painter. She can also be seen traipsing along the Cape Cod dune paths with a box of paints in tow. Sharon first saw the Cape as a young girl traveling with her family. She loved it immediately, especially the sand dunes, scruffy pines, vivid colors, and of course, the strong clear light.

She often works en plein air, trying to capture that first flash of energy on the canvas. An avid oil painter, Sharon names a constellation of artists who have influenced her work. Among then, Edgar Payne, John Singer Sargent, and Monet. Along with contemporary artists such as Anne and Cynthia Packard, Robert Cardinal, Jill Pottle, and Michael Davis.

For Sharon, painting is an emotional experience at times bordering on the transcendent. "It is my escape", she says, "My meditation, the place where all time and space stop. The paintbrush helps me transform the vicissitudes of life, color, and mystery. As for the Cape, there is no place I would rather be. There is no landscape I would rather paint."

Sharon maintains studios in Truro and Cambridge, Massachusetts, and she has exhibited many times in the greater Boston area.
